Domain Forwarding

     Domain Forwarding

Michael VanKirk

Domain forwarding is a step that you may know like the back of your hand, or may be something that you need to take baby steps with. There are multiple ways to forward a domain name. You will need several things before this process will be complete.

You will first need a domain name, which is also called a URL. A example of a domain name is www.google.com. The second item you will need is a hosting plan. These can both be purchased at a hosting company such as godaddy.com. When you have both in place you are ready to begin forwarding your domain.

The purpose of forwarding your domain name is to have the URL that you have purchased go to the hosting plan that you have selected. As an example of a domain forwarding, let's say a user goes to www.yourwebsite.com. The user notices in the address bar that the name changed to www.yourwebsiteNEW.com. This means the domain name was forwarded from www.yourwebsite.com to www.yourwebsiteNEW.com.

There are several ways this can be accomplished. The first is a meta refresh code that you can place directly into your website, which will allow the user to be redirected to the new URL. This is not only the easiest way to set up domain forwarding but the most cost-effective if you are going to pay someone.

The second way is to have your host point the DNS, which stand for Domain Name Servers, to the new URL/domain name that you have. This is tricky and must be done by someone who has experience or sever damage can occur to your website. This can usually be completed by your host for free. This method may also take a while to allow the domain to propagate which is a timely and potentially costly method if your business goes down for the propagation period.

So in conclusion if you are seeking to easily set up domain name forwarding, the best recommendation is to put a redirection code that you can easily pull from google on your website.
